A St. George man was killed and three Salt Lake County boys burned - one critically - in three separate fires Friday and Saturday.
Firefighters discovered the body of Brian Lee Western, 22, on the concrete floor of a Bloomington, Washington County, residence early Saturday. He apparently died of smoke inhalation after a cigarette ignited a couch and filled the room with smoke.St. George fire officials said the smoke from the burning couch may have disoriented Western, who was burned over 50 percent of his body, and prevented him from finding the door.
An 11-year-old Magna boy remained in critical but stable condition Saturday in the Intermountain Burn Center at the University of Utah with burns he suffered while igniting hair spray.
Matthew Dunn suffered second- and third-degree burns over 30 percent of his body, a nursing supervisor said.
Apparently, the boy and a companion had sprayed hair spray into a bowl and then lit the contents. "Then somebody dropped it or they stepped on it and it splashed up into his face," said firefighter Ed Vander Meide.
Paramedics responded to 7223 W. Gardenia about 6:40 p.m. Friday and transported the boy to the center. He suffered burns on his hands, face, chest, neck and wrists.
Two Riverton boys were also burned Friday during an explosion in a basement.
Firefighters responded to 14740 Rose Canyon Road (13100 South) after receiving a call that a propane tank had exploded. They fought and extinguished a basement fire that caused an estimated $6,000 in damages.
Wilson Andreason, 8, and Joel Evans, 9, suffered first-degree burns from the fire. Both were treated at Holy Cross Jordan Valley Hospital and then released, a spokeswoman said.
