The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Los Angeles' premier hard-rock band, has captured eight nominations for the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, including best video and best group.
The band's "Under the Bridge" and "Give It Away" videos, from its hit "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" album, earned nominations in categories including best video, best group and best direction.The funk-soul group En Vogue and veteran hard rockers Van Halen tied for the second-highest number of nominations with six each. En Vogue's dance disc "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" was nominated in categories including best direction, best group and best dance.
Van Halen earned nominations for "Right Now" in the best video, best group, and best metal-hard rock categories. It also was suggested for best editing, best direction and breakthrough video.
The long list of nominees, in 21 categories, for MTV's ninth annual awards show was announced by "Wayne's World" star Dana Carvey, who also will be host of the Sept. 9 ceremony to be broadcast live from UCLA's Pauley Pavilion.
Performers are to include Irish rock legends U2, appearing via satellite from a concert in Detroit, and En Vogue, Nirvana and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Winners will be decided by votes from more than 700 music industry members.
