DIRECTIONS -- Take highway 40 to Tabiona turnoff, then highway 32 to Hanna and Defas Dude Ranch. About four miles past ranch is trailhead. Grandaddy is three-mile hike from trailhead. Mohawk, Betsy and Lodgepole within short hike of Grandaddy.
DESCRIPTION - Located on the boundary of the High Uintas Wilderness area. High mountain lakes accessible only in summer. Grandaddy is largest and most popular natural lake in the Uintas - 173 surface acres. Mohawk is 50 acres. Lodgepole is 20 and Betsy is 34. All four are considered deep lakes, ranging from 29 to 44 feet. All are surrounded by rugged mountains and pine trees.FISH - Brook, Cuthroat.
NOTES - Extremely beautiful area in the summer. Campgrounds just past Defas. Good primituve campsites available around all four lakes. Hike from trailhead is not difficult and is well used. Plenty of feed for horses in the area.
DETAILS - Theses lakes are best fished early mornings and late afternoons with flies, and lures mid-day. Very good place to try spin-casting with fly and bubble. Use lures to get deeper when temperatures start to warm up. Good place to pack in a float tube. Also will want to fish shallow bays on larger lakes mornings and evenings.
WHAT WORKS - These are popular fly fishing waters use small hooks in suzes 14 to 18. Try renegades, royal wulff, blackknat. Hare's ear, mosquito, or red and black ants. For lures try jakes spin-a-lure, hot shot, krocodile or dare devele.
