JAN. 5-6: A storm in two surges dropped record snowfall in the Wasatch Mountains. A cold front moved in early Jan. 5, but with only enough cold air to lower the snow level to about 4,800 feet. The second surge, which contained the "real" cold air, moved into Utah the evening of the 5th. Tremendous amounts of snow accumulated in the central Wasatch Mountains, with continuous snow falling for about 48 hours in some locations.

A state snowfall record for 24 hours was set at the Alta Central Utah Department of Transportation snow-measuring site in Little Cottonwood Canyon: 55.5 inches fell from 5:15 p.m. Jan. 5 through 5:15 p.m. Jan. 6. The previous state 24-hour snowfall record was 45 inches, at the same location in November 1992.
