Lois Brant Strachan passed away on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2000, of natural causes.
She was born in Salt Lake City on January 14, 1914, the eldest child of Echo Terry and Francis Joseph Brant. A graduate of East High School, she was for many years a well-known writer and artist for The Children's Friend magazine, and also worked for 14 years as a nurse at LDS and Cottonwood Hospitals.
Lois was an extremely gifted, talented individual who at the age of 16 was awarded the first prize in a statewide competition for her poem "Rain Song," which subsequently appeared in a nationally-published volume called Younger Poets. She was also an accomplished pianist who performed a complex piece on the radio at age 13 and began giving music lessons herself when she was only 16. All her life she was deeply interested in astronomy and photography, and took numerous brilliant pictures of nature scenes and animals.
On Dec. 26, 1939, she married Donald LeRoy Strachan. He preceded her in death.
Lois is survived by two brothers, Dr. Robert L. Brant and Bill Brant, and a sister, Vivien Burgoon, all of Pasadena, CA; three nieces and one nephew; and her beloved children, to who she devoted her life - Barrie Brant Strachan (Diane), of Lakeside, CA, and Katharine Brant of Salt Lake City.
Dearest "Animal," thank you for all the priceless gifts you bequeathed us - your profound appreciation of literature, art, and beauty, your great strength and endurance, and , and most of all, your never-failing love.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, November 8, at 1 p.m. Mountain View Cemetery, 3115 East 7800 South. At her request no viewing or visitation is scheduled.
