William Giles Fowler 1928 ~ 2006 Our beloved father, husband, and grandfather, Bill Fowler, died peacefully on March 21, 2006 at his home in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born in Salt Lake City on June 12, 1928, one of a set of twins, to Emmett S. Fowler and Thressa Giles Fowler. His twin brother, Emmett S. Jr., died on December 4, 1929. Bill attended Ensign School, Bryant Jr. High, and East High School, graduating in 1945. He received his Bachelor of Arts (1949) and Juris Doctor (1952) degrees from the University of Utah. At the University he served as Junior Class President and Senior Class Treasurer. He affiliated with Beta Theta Pi. Upon graduation, he was nominated to Phi Kappa Phi. In law school, Bill served as president of Phi Delta Phi and as an Executive Editor of the first school-sponsored Law Review. When he graduated from law school, the United States was at war in Korea. Within days of his graduation, Bill received a First Lieutenant commission as a Reserve Officer in the Army Judge Advocate Generals (JAG) Corps, and reported to active duty at Ft. Lewis. Bill transferred to the JAG School at The University of Virginia at Charlottesville. He then served in the Pentagon as Appellate Government Counsel for the Army, appearing before the various Boards of Review and the United States Court of Military Appeals. After active duty, he continued to serve in the Army JAG active reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. During the final six years of his Reserve career, he was attached to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. The Academy awarded Bill the Army Commendation Medal for his service. While in Washington, DC, Bill met his wonderful wife-to-be, Maria Iny were married on February 25, 1956, in Washington, DC. Bill and InUnited States Supreme Court, and the Ninth and Tenth Circuit Courts of Appeal. Continued on next column
