He was raised in McGill and graduated from White Pine High School in 1959. From an early age, he enjoyed playing a variety of instruments and marching with the band throughout the western United States. He served an LDS mission in Florida from 1961-1963.

After graduation, the family moved to Bountiful, Utah, where Alan started what became a 32-year career with Amoco Oil Company in Salt Lake City.

Alan and Janet were blessed with seven children who were the joy of his life. Alan was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in a variety of callings throughout his life. He especially enjoyed serving as branch president at the Barton Creek assisted living center. Alan fulfilled a lifelong goal of serving a full-time mission with his eternal companion. The couple served from July 2003 to January 2005 in the California San Francisco Mission. Alan was loved and respected by all who knew him for his gentle nature and his willingness to serve others.
