SALT LAKE CITY — The clock is ticking for thousands of Utah taxpayers who filed for extensions in April.

The Internal Revenue Service is expecting a wave of returns to be filed by Monday, Oct. 17 — the due date for individual taxpayers who requested a 6-month extension to file their 2010 income tax returns. That date is also the last day 2010 tax returns can be submitted electronically.

At midnight, Oct.17, electronic filing ends for the 2010 individual income tax returns. After that time, taxpayers can only submit a paper tax return for 2010.

Nationally, the IRS anticipates approximately 10.7 million tax returns from taxpayers. Locally, an estimated 92,600 Utahns requested the extension to file for this year.

Some taxpayers can wait until after the Oct. 17 date to file, including those serving in military combat zones and people affected by recent natural disasters.

In Utah, a projected 894,000 taxpayers will file electronically. Taxpayers can file free, online by using IRS Free File at IRS.gov.
