SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Transit Authority is providing new options for people who commute by bicycle.
Electronic bike lockers designed for short-term use will be added to six FrontRunner and TRAX stations this month. The lockers can be rented by the hour for a small fee. Before using the lockers, cyclists must obtain a locker payment card from any UTA customer service location.
Ogden, Salt Lake Central, Provo and Murray Central stations will each receive four new lockers, along with air pumps and bike repair stands. Draper and Stadium TRAX stations will receive two lockers each. The Stadium Station lockers were funded in partnership with the University of Utah.
Many of the pumps and repair stands are already in place, and lockers should be installed within the next several days.
“We’re hoping that these lockers will help keep bikes out of the wind and snow,” UTA planner Jacob Splan said.
UTA has also partnered with two cities to improve bike access to public transit. The agency worked with Lehi to add a bike lane to Murdock Canal Trail. The trail runs throughout Utah County and provides access to the Lehi FrontRunner Station. UTA also worked with Tooele to add the city’s first bike lane along the city's Main Street, connecting public transit with several schools, parks and neighborhoods.
