Filisi Filipe, Herriman (Sr.)

A thousand-yard rusher a year ago, Herriman senior running back Filisi Filipe could be on his way to doubling that output after a dominant season opener last week.

Filipe carried the ball 27 times for 276 yards and three touchdowns, leading Herriman to a 25-14 victory over Bountiful. His 73-yard TD run with 1:14 left in the game iced the victory for the Mustangs.

“Filisi is a workhorse. He has the power, speed and the toughness to be the best running back in the state,” said Herriman coach Matt Rickards.

A year ago, Filipe rushed for 1,108 yards and 16 TDs and was voted a second team all-stater.

Girls Volleyball

Zamari Christensen, Woods Cross (Sr.)

It’s two weeks into the season, and Zamari Christensen has picked up right where she left off a year ago.

A first team all-state setter who helped Woods Cross win the 5A title a year ago, she’s guided the Wildcats to a 9-0 record early this season, including six wins at the Murray tournament last weekend.

For the season, the St. Mary’s commit has notched 252 assists, 51 digs and nine aces.

“Throughout our first nine games, Zamari Christensen has been incredibly consistent both in practice and competition. As our senior setter, Z is dedicated to her craft, constantly watching game film and seeking feedback from her teammates and coaches,” said Woods Cross coach Nicole Hogan. “She is always looking for ways to improve and is willing to do whatever it takes to help our team succeed.”

Girl Soccer

Taylor Nye, Box Elder (Jr.)

Box Elder ran its record to 4-0 with a pair of wins last week, and junior attacker Taylor Nye has been one of the catalysts of that success.

Nye has notched seven goals and three assists this season, including a five-goal outburst last week against Morgan.

“After leading our varsity team in scoring last year with 22 goals as a sophomore, we knew opposing teams would focus heavily on Taylor this season. With that in mind, one of our goals was to see her become an even bigger playmaker and increase her assist numbers,” said Box Elder coach BJ Barber.

“So far, she is on pace to surpass her goal total from last season and has already matched her entire assist total from last year. Taylor is a constant threat regardless of where she is on the field, capable of creating scoring opportunities for herself or her teammates.”

Behind her 22 goals last season, she was voted second-team all-state.

Boys Cross Country

Luke Pincock, Timpanogos (Jr.)

Luke Pincock kicked off the season with a strong win at the pre-Region 8 meet at Scera Park in Orem last Friday.

The junior ran a time of 16:58.1, beating Uintah’s Kamden Gleason by 10 seconds.

“Luke is a great athlete and an outstanding leader for the Timpanogos XC team. As a junior this year, he has stepped into a leadership role and has become someone the team looks to for both direction and motivation. He had some great leaders to learn from last year, and with 10 of our top 12 seniors graduating, Luke has done an incredible job growing into that role,” said Timpanogos coach Jody Benson.

Pincock finished 31st at the 4A state meet a year ago. He was the third-highest-placing sophomore.

“When I need to communicate something to the team, Luke is one of the first people I turn to. He does a great job getting information to the team, keeping everyone connected and, most importantly, bringing energy and excitement to the group. His leadership goes beyond his performances — he genuinely cares about his teammates and wants to see everyone succeed,” said Benson.

Girls Cross Country

Eliza Thornley, Layton (Jr.)

Big things are in store for Layton’s Eliza Thornley this season.

Coming off great freshman and sophomore seasons, the junior kicked off the 2026 season with a bang last week as she won the Freber Invitational 5K posting a time 18:14.99.

She finished 22 seconds ahead of teammate Annie Newman.

“Eliza is the total package. She’s talented, hard-working and the best leader. She’s just as concerned about her teammates as she is herself. She elevates the whole team,” said Layton coach Carrie Fredin.

Thornley finished sixth at last year’s 6A state cross country meet as a sophomore. She backed it up with a fourth-place finish in the 3,200 meter at the state track meet in the spring.

Girls Tennis

Ava Jensen, Lone Peak (Sr.)

A doubles state champion a year ago, Ava Jensen has transitioned to singles this season and has not skipped a beat.

Jensen went 5-0 last week, including going 4-0 at the Utah Valley Ashton Invitational as the Knights won the team title at the tournament.

“Ava is an amazing captain who genuinely cares about the girls. She is passionate, competitive and always rises to the challenge — especially when facing unexpected opponents, which has led to her undefeated start to the season,” said Lone Peak coach Roger Baumgartner.

“She epitomizes what it means to be a student-athlete, maintaining a 4.0 GPA while balancing dedication, leadership, hard work, and a true love for the game. Her determination and commitment to her teammates make her such a special captain.”

Last season Jensen teamed with Ella Bradford to win the 6A second singles state title.

Boys Golf

Ethan Luna, West Field (Sr.)

Two matches into the season, West Field’s Ethan Luna has quickly emerged as the golfer to beat in Region 5 this season. After shooting a 63 at The Barn in the first Region 5 match last week, he backed it up with a 66 at Crane Field Golf Course on Monday.

His 66 on Monday helped West Field win its first region varsity match in school history.

“Ethan is such a fun, good player and person to coach. He is a phenomenal teammate and lifts up and encourages all of those around him. He also works as hard as anyone on his game,” said West Field coach Broc Ballif. “He’s a perfectionist and is always looking on ways to improve. What has impressed us as coaches this season is not only his scoring, but the mental side of the game. He’s worked hard on developing that and is doing a great job with that this year.”

Baseball

Harrison Lounsbury, Altamont (Sr.)

View Comments

Altamont improved to 5-2 this season with four wins a week ago, and the senior leadership of Harrison Lounsbury has been one of the keys to the strong start.

For the season, he’s hitting .500 with one home run and 10 RBIs.

Last week in a big 24-10 win over Wayne — a team that beat Altamont the week before — Lounsbury went 4 for 4 with three RBIs.

“Harrison has been an outstanding player for us this year. He has improved and made himself better every year. Now, as a senior, he is leading our team at the plate and playing excellent. Very proud of Harry and the young man he is. He’s tough, has a good attitude and gives full effort,” said Altamont coach Chaz Fisher.
