BYU has added a rather accomplished assistant coach to its men’s basketball staff.
Kevin Young has hired Patrick Mutombo as a new assistant for the Cougars, the program announced Monday.
Mutombo is replacing Will Voigt, who left for Boise State earlier this offseason after two years with Young in Provo.
“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Patrick and his family to Provo,” Young said in a statement.
“Patrick is one of the best humans I’ve met in the game of basketball. Cougar Nation will love him and his family. He has tremendous experience in the NBA and with USA Basketball that will be of great benefit to all of our players and staff. We couldn’t be more excited to add the Mutombo family to BYU basketball.”
Mutombo arrives at BYU with 10 years of experience as an NBA assistant for the Denver Nuggets, Toronto Raptors, Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks and Memphis Grizzlies, reaching the playoffs nine times in total. He won a championship with the Raptors in 2019 and spent the 2022-23 campaign alongside Young in Phoenix.
Among the notable players Mutombo helped coach are Kawhi Leonard, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant and other All-Star talents.
In addition to his NBA résumé, Mutombo served as head coach for the Raptors’ G League affiliate for two seasons and was an assistant for both the Austin Spurs and his alma mater Metro State for a year each.
As a player, he captured two Division-II national championships with Metro State and played professionally overseas from 2003-09.
Mutombo will now be part of his first Division-I coaching staff at BYU, sharing the bench with fellow assistants Tim Fanning, John Linehan, Brandon Dunson and Chris Burgess.
