SALT LAKE CITY — Utah health officials again reported more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday as well as five additional deaths in the state.

Of the 6,170 people tested since Saturday, 1,068 tested positive for the disease — a 17.2% positive rate, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Sunday marks the fourth day in a row with more than 1,000 additional cases confirmed in Utah.

The rolling seven-day average for new cases is now 974 per day, and the average positive test rate is 13.9% Currently, 180 patients are hospitalized with COVID-19 in Utah, seven fewer than on Saturday. Hospitalizations in the state since the outbreak started now total 3,729.

In Utah County — which has 636,235 residents according to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau — 18,436 of have tested positive for the disease, or about 2.9% of the population.

That’s a slightly higher rate of infection than neighboring Salt Lake County, where 30,784 of 1,160,437 residents have tested positive, or 2.7%. The county once accounted for about 40% or more of the state’s daily cases on average before a countywide mask mandate was implemented in late June.

In Summit County — which was a hot spot of the disease at the pandemic’s onset, and where officials also implemented a mask mandate in June — 998 of 42,145 residents have tested positive for COVID-19, or 2.4%.

Other areas along the Wasatch Front have case rates around 1% lower than Utah and Salt Lake counties.

In the Bear River health district — which encompasses Box Elder, Cache and Rich counties with 186,818 residents total — 3,351 people have tested positive for the disease or 1.8% of the population. In the Weber-Morgan health district, 4,295 of 272,337 residents have tested positive, or 1.6%.

In Davis County, 5,104 of 355,481 have had confirmed infections, or 1.4%.

Tooele County has among the lowest infection rates in northern Utah, with just 877 of its 72,259 residents testing positive, or 1.2%.

The deaths reported Sunday were a Salt Lake County man between the ages of 25 and 44; a Salt Lake County man between 45-64; two Utah County men between 65-84; and a Utah County woman older than 85.

The men all died while hospitalized, while the woman was a long-term care resident. They bring the state’s death toll due to the disease to 453 people.

Now 70,615 cases have been confirmed of 811,249 people tested in Utah since the pandemic began, an overall positive rate of 8.7%.

About 54,200 of the state’s cases are considered recovered after surviving the three-week point since their diagnoses, meaning just under 16,000 cases remain active.
